Spring & the Rising of Yang

As the first of May’s bank holidays passes us by, and the throes of Spring are well and truly upon us, the lime-like vistas of the longer days bring hope and excitement - so much so, you might start to feel your toes hovering up off the ground.

Led forward by the allure of Summer, it’s important we allow ourselves to drink up the joy and move with the outward energy of Spring. But we’ve got to do it with our feet firmly on the ground - or else it can get too much, too quick. 

Spring is about renewal, new beginnings, and moving forward with action after the quieter, more pensive days of Winter. The buds on the trees evoke a feeling of optimism within us. The hungry modern man wastes no time snatching this new energy up - maybe through no fault of our own, but as a product of the society that surrounds us.

This optimism, however joyful, risks overriding our patience, and things can quickly become overwhelming - leaving us tired, stressed, and unfocused. With that comes the danger of forgetting to hold our own. Forgetting to move from our heart. Forgetting to move from our centre.

In Chinese Medicine, Spring is represented by the element of Wood; Winter by Water; and Summer by Fire. Wood - like Spring - is often symbolised by the image of a tree.

In order for a tree to flourish, it must be securely grounded in the earth, with its roots sufficiently watered, so that its branches can reach and seek life from the sun.

As the allure of the longer days risks consuming us, we too can use this imagery as a quiet reminder of how to support the movement in our own worlds and navigate balance within our own micro-system. Rooting our feet like the roots of a tree and with that, embracing the cyclical nature of life.

Rooted in the five elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this five-week course will guide you through a mix of practices to keep you moving forwards with stability - maintaining clarity within action, and clear seeing within change - even as the winds of Spring stir and the heat of Summer rises.

There’ll be stillness and movement, stretching and breathing. You will build strength within softness, and it will leave you feeling good - or at least calm, a bit more focused, and a bit more your own.


Friday mornings - 7.30-8.30am - 5 weeks - Starting 16 May - till 13th June - suggested cost of £65 or pay what you feel.
